One popular international surfing destination is Siargao Island, known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. Located 800 kilometers southeast of Manila in the province of Surigao del Norte, Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island that covers an area of 437 square kilometers.
While the island has many surfing locations, the most famous is Cloud 9, popular for its thick, hollow tubes. Cloud 9 was ranked by CNN as one of the top 10 surfing spots in the world.
Depending on the season of the year, the perfectly barreling waves at Cloud 9 can range from 3 to 15 feet. For those who are up for challenging rides, the recommended months are September to January.
Since the waves at Cloud 9 break over sharp coral, this location is not recommended for beginners. The spot is home to the annual international surfing competition the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup. The Surigao del Norte provincial government sponsors the event.
